Do you know what Burnout syndrome is? Find out here and discover some of the symptoms.

When we advance in terms of academic levels and professional projects, we can feel somewhat overwhelmed, pressured and yes, perhaps a little scared, mainly when it comes to new situations. However, there are times when the external elements of our study and work environments can affect us more than we would like.

In this article, we want to share with you a situation that is seen more and more frequently in generations that are currently studying university, master’s degree, doctorate levels, and in those who have started their working lives: the burnout syndrome.

What is burnout syndrome?

Burnout syndrome, also known as the professional burnout syndrome, is a situation in which a person has some problems that are highly reflected in a state of physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion caused due to stress and anxiety that arises in the study or workspace.

Some data about the burnout syndrome…

In 2000, the World Health Organization recognized work-related stress as a risk factor and that it can affect each person differently.
WHO indicates that:

“…it can lead to dysfunctional behaviors, contribute to poor physical and mental health; they can cause psychological problems, psychiatric disorders and end up in situations of absenteeism”.

It was not until 2019 that the burnout syndrome was recognized within the (ICD-11) International Classification of Diseases, in its revision number 11 and it is then that the WHO recognized the burnout syndrome or professional burnout as an associated pathology to mental, emotional, and physical exhaustion caused by work.

Some of the causes

Among the main causes of burnout syndrome is stress, also extended working hours, positions with high levels of responsibility, monotonous jobs, bad work climate, lack of communication, lack of workplace wellness programs, lack of motivation, relationship problems at work, low salary remuneration, among others.

What are the symptoms?

The World Health Organization defines burnout syndrome as a "syndrome resulting from chronic stress in the workplace that has not been managed successfully".

Therefore, the WHO has defined three main characteristics as symptoms:
  • Feelings of lack of energy or exhaustion
  • Increased mental distance from work, or negative or cynical feelings about work
  • Reduced professional efficiency
Among other symptoms, we will find irritability, cynicism, depersonalization, depression, indifference, emotional and mental exhaustion, low productivity.
